Get rid of dust ~ When dusting, move around the room in a circle, starting with the highest points and working your way down to the floor, says cleaning expert Laura Dellutri of healthyhousekeeper.com, who suggests using Swiffer dusters, air purifiers, and vacuums with sealed HEPA filters to get the most thorough clean.
Start up your dehumidifier ~ Clean it, make sure that it’s in working order, then run it in a humid basement or partially underground room. Dampness during spring and summer months causes mildew.
Air out rugs ~ Air out throw rugs on a clothesline to freshen.
Clean carpets ~ Clean carpets as soon as the spring mud season is over. Vacuum them thoroughly, then shampoo with a spray foam or powder, or rent a steamer from a hardware store for an even deeper clean.
Check your mattress ~ Flip or rotate your mattress. Check the warranty card for the manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations.
Wash pillows ~ Wash pillows and curtains to help reduce allergens and dust mites.
Wash your windows ~ Clean the residue left behind by winter storms by tackling the job while the weather is still cool to prevent streaking. Start indoors before installing your screens, then finish the job outside on a dry day.
Clean the deck ~ Clean the deck to remove grime, pollen, fungus, and mildew. Scrub the surface with a deck cleanser or this homemade cleaning formula: Add 1 cup of powdered laundry detergent to a gallon of hot water, and add 1/2 cup of chlorine bleach to kill moss or mildew.
Check your detectors ~ Change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. In addition to testing batteries regularly, you should change these twice a year without fail.
Put up window boxes and prep planters ~ Dump out old soil and clean the boxes thoroughly. Line wooden boxes with garbage bags to protect them from moisture. Make sure there are drainage holes. Replant with potting soil.
Sweep steps and replace doormats ~ Most household dirt — 75 to 80 percent — is tracked in from outside. Keep your home cleaner by regularly sweeping driveways, porches, sidewalks, and garage doors. Spring is a perfect time to add a new doormat to both the inside and the outside of the door.
Clean shower curtains ~ Whether you have fabric, plastic, or vinyl curtains, toss them in the washing machine to remove all the soap scum, shampoo, and mildew that built up over the previous year.
